New Lines to my Store Coming Soon

Posted by Simon Harrison on Sunday, May 24, 2020, In : New Products
I have been working on a few different leather items for me.
I have always been badgered by a friend of mine to make some leather watch straps. I have been putting him off as I have never made anything as thin and small as a watch strap! Anyway I have made a few now and given them out for testing. The first ones use buckles that I already have. But bridle buckles are a bit big so I will have to change that. Holes need to be smaller so I will be on the lookout for some smaller punches. And the ...

Corvid-19 disruption

Posted by Simon Harrison on Friday, March 27, 2020, In : News
I hope that this post finds you and your family well.

At the moment I am still able to complete and process orders. My buckle and leather supplier is still operating a limited service and should still be able to deliver everything that I need. And the Post Office is still carrying out deliveries. And as I work alone I can still continue to work. As my workshop is in one of my fields I am keeping my social distancing at around 200m!
Anyway. On a better note! As a big thankyou to our NHS and hard...

So just what is Handmade?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Saturday, November 9, 2019, In : News

A quick search of the internet will throw up hundreds, if not thousands of handmade items. But what actually constitutes a handmade item?

The Cambridge Dictionary has its meaning as

“Made by someone using their hands rather than a machine”

With that in mind lets have a look at what companies and businesses class as handmade. Obviously, I am going to base this on leather goods as that is my craft. I will go through the basic process of crafting a leather belt and compare the differenc...

White Stitching?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, In : News
Just a few notes on white stitching on my handmade leather goods.
Firstly, white stitching does look nice on many of the leather colours that I use. That being said - it doesn't stay white for long!
White thread is actually described as whitey/brown thread. See even the manufacture can't keep it white for long!
By the time that I have waxed it - I keep a different piece of wax especially for white thread - it starts to take on a slightly yellowy/brown hint. Not much, but I can see it when it is ...

New Camera Strap Designs

Posted by Simon Harrison on Monday, May 13, 2019, In : Products
I have been experimenting with some new handmade leather camera straps recently. I have four out for field testing at the moment. Just to check that they all work as they should!
I have tried to think of something that is not common in the world of photographers and their cameras. Being Leather I know that they are stylish, and as they are made entirely by hand they are all bespoke. But I have also used some fittings from the saddlery trade. The Globetrotter shoulder strap for instance, uses a...

So just how much weight can one of my handmade leather camera straps carry?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, In : News
"Can your camera straps support the weight of my *insert camera model*? It weighs *insert weight*?" Is a very common question I am asked. And the answer is invariable. Yes! Yes it can!
Now as a picture is worth a thousand words I thought that I should test one.

So this is my Globetrotter camera sling supporting a 25lt water container. And yes it is full! so that is around 25kg supported quite happily.

This then made me think. What else could I hang from that strap. Hhmm! What's that in the backg...

New Websites

Posted by Simon Harrison on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, In : News
I have been tinkering with some new websites recently. I decided now was a good time to have some web specific names and to split some of my store items. I also needed to buy up some domain names like www.oaksidesaddlery.uk using the recently introduced .uk web address. It was also a chance to play with some settings and see what I could come up with.

Having my store with Ecwid makes it easy as I only have to add the store to each website - and viola! there it is.

What does Brexit mean to me?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Saturday, March 16, 2019, In : News
To be honest I haven't got a clue. I don't think anyone else has either really!
My suppliers are UK based so in theory this shouldn't be an issue.
Shipping to Europe will probably change as you can guarantee that your government will want to charge an import tax on your goods!
I will also expect postage costs to Europe to increase. Not because it will be more expensive to ship there, but because they can!
Anyway, once those in charge finally get their act together, and work for the country, inste...

I then use Renapur. A small amount on a sponge is all that you need. Simply rub it into the leather. Your leather doesn't have to be really clean and it can still be a bit damp. Renapur will remove any left over dirt and condition ...

My Top 7 Best (Worst) Horse Clippers

Posted by Simon Harrison on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, In : Clippers
A countdown of the dirtiest and hairiest horse clippers that I have repaired and serviced.
And you thought yours were bad! just take a look at these horse clippers

At number 7, the hair has made its way through the horse clippers and in to the motor.

No 6 of the dirty horse clippers is the amount of hair blocking the cooling air flow out of the motor and over the blades.

Over oiling of the horse clippers can lead to a build up of hair in the clipper head.

When you see this much horse hair behind t...

Hand Stitching

Posted by Simon Harrison on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, In : News

Everything that I make is stitched by hand. That's right, I stitch through the average 7mm of leather using traditional, time-honoured skills of the saddler.
I use 4 cord linen thread which I wax before stitching. 4 cord/18 linen thread is a bit thicker than the norm but makes for a stronger stitch.
I stitch using a double-hand technique. This has one piece of thread with a needle on each end. Each needle is passed through the same hole from opposite sides, crossing in the middle, before movin...

New Design Plaited Leather Dog Collar

So I have made a new deign of plaited leather dog collar. This collar merges the working dog collar style with a plaited collar. Because, lets face it some working dogs deserve a bit of style!

The first thing that you notice is the solid brass West End buckle providing years of rust free use. The dee ring is at the very end and two fixed loops keep the pint well and truly under control. The leather is a reverse turn here, meaning that the inside of the collar, against your dogs neck, is as smo...

I make many different leather dog leads. The reason being is that we all have different sizes and breeds of dogs, we are all different heights and builds, and we all want our dogs to different things. Some people like to have a well trained dog that walks to heel, others just need the dog to stay safe whilst on a road. A tracking dog needs to be worked at a distance, and a showing dog needs to be worked close. So what lead should you chose?

Some Traditional Saddlery Rules

I make my leather goods using traditional saddlery methods. These methods have been perfected over hundreds of years. As the art has developed saddlers adopted a set of rules to work to for a uniformity to their products.
I use some of these rules but certainly not all of them
  • Never edge the outside edge of a loop.
  • Adjustment holes are spaced the width of the strap apart (A one inch wide leather belt will have holes spaced at one inch intervals).
  • Always have an odd number of holes in a strap (Thi...

Once I receive your order I initially work out the spacing and size.

The top and bottom of the letters and the spacing between is marked out. Some letters, A and V for instance need to be spaced closer together. Notice that the left-hand edge is further back. This is so as to avoid the knot in the wood that would otherwise be in the way, wouldn't it (oh dear wood puns!)

The letters are routed in by hand. They ar...

New Dog Collar Ideas

Patent Stripe
This would be a leather dog collar based on my patent stripe browbands and nosebands. A standard traditional leather dog collar with an inserted piece of patent leather. I can't make a collar entirely from patent leather as it is too thin in substance. Therefore the strength will need to be in the normal bridle butt leather that I make all of...

Horse Clipper Servicing

Are your Horse Clippers getting hot when you try and clip your horse?

This is usually caused by an excessive build up of hair in the clippers cooling air flow. Leave them blocked for too long and the clippers will become so hot that you can’t hold them (Imagine how this feels on your horse!). Continue using them and the Thermofuse may pop or worse still the motor burns out.

Does my Belt Need a Running Loop?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, In : Belts

What is a running loop?

A running loop is a small loop of leather that is free to move up and down your belt. It is normally the piece that you lose when it falls off!

What does a running loop do?

The reason behind the running loop is that it is there to keep the point of the leather tight against the rest of the belt, and hence, your waist.

Do I need one?

This all depends on the style of your belt. A casual belt, for instance, worn with jeans will not normally require a running loop as the point ...

At 1 1/2 inches wide the lead is design to fit a giant Boerboel dog.

What's The Point?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Saturday, July 12, 2014, In : News

The point when making leather is the part of a belt or strap that passes through the buckle. There are a variety of designs and styles that a Cordwainer can use, and sometimes traditional methods dictate what style of point a strap should have. Nowadays, on leather belts and the like, this is just a case of personal preference.

There are two styles of point that I use and both are traditional designs.

Have you ever wondered why my belts are named after UK towns?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Thursday, July 3, 2014, In : News

The usual reason is that many belt buckles are named after towns. This is more than likely that that style of buckle originated in that town.

If a buckle is not named then my naming convention goes to the town from where my first order for that belt originated.

Simple really!

So if you want to be the first with a belt named after your town, pop over to Oakside’s Custom Belts and design your one=of-a-kind masterpiece!

Measuring your Dog for a Handmade Leather Slip Collar

Measuring your dog for a slip collar

The measurement that I require to make your leather handmade slip collar is not the same as a traditional collar. This is due to the way that a leather slip collar fits on your dog. As a slip collar does not open it needs to be able to pass completely over your dog's head without pinching or rubbing.

To measure you will need;

  • A fabric tape measure,

  • and your dog of course!

Simply take your tape and measure around the largest part of your dog's head....

Measuring For The Perfect Fit

Posted by Simon Harrison on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, In : News

To measure your dog for your new Handmade Leather Dog Collar from Oakside is quite simple really.

Method 1

You will need the following items;

  • A fabric tape measure (this can be in inches or centimetres)

  • Two fingers

  • And your dog

Hopefully you have all three of these otherwise you may have to improvise!

Place the fabric tape around your dogs neck where the collar will go. The tape needs to have enough slack to easily slide two fingers underneath it. This is the size of the collar that you should order...

Care And Treatment Of Your Leather – Leather Belts

Posted by Simon Harrison on Monday, June 16, 2014, In : Repairs
The treatment and conditioning of your new Handmade Leather Belt fromOakside is slightly different from my saddlery products. Most belts do not have to put up with the abuse that a dog collar is subjected to. And, although my belts are made from the same Bridle Leather and in the same way, the preconditioning should be carried out in a slightly different manner.

If you are feeling brave, and you don’t mind the smell of oil then go ahead and carry out the oiling mentioned in a previous post. ...

Care and Treatment of your Leather - After Care

Posted by Simon Harrison on Thursday, June 12, 2014, In : Repairs

How should you look after your handmade leather item from Oakside Saddlery?

Having spent a fair amount of cash on your handmade leather goods it seems only fitting that you should want to take care of it. Most leather if looked after will last many years of hard use. Dog collars, for instance put up with a lot of abuse – from mud, water, baths, sand, and their mate chewing on it!

To keep your leather in good condition and looking like new takes only a little bit of effort. If the leather is r...

Care And Treatment Of Your New Handmade Leather Goods - Oiling

Posted by Simon Harrison on Thursday, June 12, 2014, In : Repairs
You’re all excited because that package from Oakside Saddlery has turned up today! You are desperate to use it, but first, you have to condition the leather!

Leather is a natural product that requires looking after just like your own skin does. Although the leather goes through a long tanning process before I get it, it still needs further conditioning to soften the leather and nourish it.

Leather is extremely absorbent, it will readily soak up whatever you put on it. Have you noticed how sof...

Racing to get a Leather Sighthound Collar

Posted by Simon Harrison on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, In : Products

The Sighthound Collar

image

A sighthound is a type of hound that catches its prey by using shear speed and agility. It uses, as the name would suggest, its keen vision to keep this prey in sight at all times. Sighthounds have a long, lean, and flexible body; long legs and neck, and a deep chest. This all comes together to create the perfect, high-speed, hunter.

Breeds of dog associated with being a Sighthound include;

  • Greyhound

  • Whippet,

  • Lurcher

  • Afghan Hound

  • Borzoi

  • Wolfhound

  • Saluki

To name but a few.

Standard Leather Dog Lead

My standard dog lead is a traditional leather lead made with practicality in mind.

A simple but useful leather dog lead that does exactly what it is meant to do!

Leather

The leather is my standard bridle leather, very strong and durable, perfect for my leather dog leads. Why have a nice collar and then scrimp on the lead? There are a variety of lengths;

  • Short 24 inches (60 cm)

  • Medium 36 inches (91 cm)

  • Long 48 inches (121 cm)

  • Extra Long (152 cm) (I'll cover this one in a later post)

And a variety of w...

Baldric Sword Belt

Posted by Simon Harrison on Friday, June 6, 2014, In : History

I get asked to make some strange things sometimes. This one is a Baldric Sword Belt for Pirate re-enactment. Other than a few measurements to ensure a good fit, the rest was down to me. One caveat, the sword belt was for a left-hander.

image

Probably a bit over engineered but then again the original version of these sword belts would, more than likely, have been made by the local saddler!

I didn’t charge nearly enough but it was great fun to make!

And it does show what I am capable of!

Military Working Dogs

Posted by Simon Harrison on Monday, June 2, 2014, In : History

Dogs have been used in war for many years. Britons, Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans all used large breeds of dog for scouts, tracking, and battle. Attila the Hun used giant Molossian dogs during his campaigns. Roman armies used entire companies of large Molossian dogs to devastate enemy warriors. These dogs would have spiked collars and mail armour, fitted to them to cause utter mayhem!

It was in WW1 that the Red Cross wanted to use Ambulance dogs to locate injured soldiers. Dogs were used a...

Why should you buy a West End Leather Belt from Oakside?

Posted by Simon Harrison on Sunday, June 1, 2014, In : Belts

The West End leather belt must be one of my favourite belts. I have two of these belts myself. One made from 1 1/2 inch wide, Australian nut bridle leather, with white stitching fitted with a stainless steel West End buckle. I use this belt every day on my jeans and it still looks as good now as when I first made it - even if I do say so myself!

The second West End leather belt I have uses a Nickel buckle. This one is more subdued, made from black bridle leather and stitched in black. This bel...

A Short History of Dog Collars

Posted by Simon Harrison on Monday, May 26, 2014, In : History

Dog Collars have been in use by mankind for thousands of years. Images can be found in Ancient Egyptian paintings dating back to 3500BC. These collars were made from leather and had the dogs name on them. The Ancient Greeks used dogs to protect their livestock and used large spiked collars. The Ancient Romans were devoted to their dogs, and collars have been found with with messages in them showing appreciation to their dogs.

Dogs have been used, and sadly abused, by humans for many years; hu...
